Your New Tax ID Is Already Tied to Your NIN
Nigeria’s Tax ID system now pulls individuals from NIN and businesses from CAC records. Retrieval is the first step, not a fresh queue.
Nigeria has a new Tax ID system, but it does not start with another plastic card.
For an individual, it starts with your NIN.
For a registered business, it starts with the CAC record.
The Nigeria Revenue Service’s Tax ID portal now lets both groups retrieve the number online.
This is retrieval, not another identity registration
NRS describes the Tax ID as a unique number used to identify people and entities for tax administration.
The important part is where it comes from.
For individuals, NRS links the tax identity to the National Identification Number held by NIMC.
For companies, business names, partnerships and incorporated trustees, it links to CAC registration records.
So the first question is not “where do I go and register for Tax ID?”
It is “does the government information already attached to me match?”
What an individual needs
The NRS retrieval guide says an individual starts with NIN.
The portal then asks for details including first name, last name and date of birth.
Those are checked against official identity records.
If everything matches, the system confirms the Tax ID and the identity attached to it.
If the records do not match, NRS says the system can flag the inconsistency so it can be corrected through the appropriate authority.
That is why a wrong date of birth on one government record keeps finding new ways to return to your life.
Businesses use CAC details instead
Registered organisations do not enter an owner’s NIN as the main business identifier.
The Tax ID portal allows companies and other registered entities to search using CAC information such as the registration number or organisation name.
NRS says the point is to keep one verified tax identity tied to the legal entity already known to CAC.
Why this is showing up now
The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 commenced on 1 January 2026.
The law says taxable persons are to register with the relevant tax authority and obtain a taxpayer identifier for compliance.
NRS has since built the retrieval system around the identity records government already holds.
Its e-invoicing platform also announced in July 2026 that Tax ID replaces TIN as the legal identifier for its e-invoicing system.
That does not mean every old number on every document suddenly vanished that day.
It means the new standard identifier is what NRS is moving its systems toward.
Do not type your NIN into the first link somebody sends
The official retrieval address is taxid.nrs.gov.ng.
That matters because this process asks for information people should not be dropping into random forms.
Check the domain before entering anything.
The simplest version of the new system is this:
Your tax identity is being tied to the identity government already knows.
Which is convenient right up until two government databases disagree about who you are.
