We Ranked Nigerian Bank Apps By How Much Anxiety They Give You When Opening Them
A completely unscientific ranking based on one metric: the feeling in your chest between tapping the icon and seeing the number.
Every banking app performs the same function. Not every banking app makes you feel the same way about it. We ranked them on the only metric that matters, the half-second between the splash screen and the balance.
8. The one that opens instantly
Bottom of the list, because there is no buffer. No loading spinner, no gentle animation. You tap, and the number is simply there, in a font that feels a bit large for what it is saying.
7. The one that logs you out every single time
The anxiety here is procedural rather than financial. By the time you have re-entered the PIN, resolved the OTP and dismissed the update prompt, you have forgotten why you opened it. Arguably a feature.
6. The one with the loading animation that takes three seconds
Three seconds is exactly long enough to run through what you spent yesterday. Cruel design.
5. The one that greets you by name
”Good afternoon, Chidinma.” It is trying to be warm. It reads, in context, like a doctor asking you to sit down.
4. The one that shows a spending graph before the balance
Nobody asked for the graph. The graph has never once been good news.
3. The one that pushes a notification the moment money leaves
Ranked high because the anxiety is unsolicited. You were not even in the app. You were living your life.
2. The one where transfers are pending for two hours
The number says one thing. You know the number is lying, and you know in which direction.
1. The one you have not opened since the last week of the month
Undefeated. The anxiety is not in the app, it is in the icon, sitting on your home screen, being looked at and not tapped.
We are aware this list is not rigorous. Rigour would require opening all of them.
