If your UK graduation plan includes two full years after school, look at the calendar.
The Graduate visa changes on 1 January 2027.
The current GOV.UK page says people who apply on or before 31 December 2026 get a Graduate visa lasting two years.
Apply from January 1 and it lasts 18 months.
Six months disappears at midnight.
The application date is the line
This change is easy to misread as “students graduating in 2027 get less time.”
That is not how the government page phrases it.
The rule is tied to when you apply.
On or before December 31, 2026: two years.
On or after January 1, 2027: 18 months.
For people with a PhD or another doctoral qualification, the Graduate visa remains three years.
You cannot apply whenever you like
The Graduate route is for people who have successfully completed an eligible course in the UK.
Your university or college has to tell the Home Office that you completed the course before you apply.
You also have to apply before your Student visa, or old Tier 4 (General) visa, expires.
So the December 31 line does not mean everybody can rush in on New Year’s Eve. You still have to be eligible to apply by then.
That is the part worth checking early if your course is ending close to the changeover.
The visa clock starts when it is approved
GOV.UK says the Graduate visa begins on the day the application is approved.
It is not an extension you can save for later.
And the Graduate visa itself cannot be extended.
The government says somebody who wants to remain longer may be able to switch into another route, such as Skilled Worker, if they qualify.
That is a different application with different rules.
What actually changed
For most non-doctoral graduates, the current route gives two years after a qualifying UK course.
From January, new applicants get a year and a half.
On paper, six months may not look dramatic.
In real life, six months is another recruitment cycle. Another tenancy decision. Another stretch of rent. Another period in which an employer can decide whether there is a longer-term route to staying.
That does not make the new Graduate visa useless. It makes the date more important than it used to be.
Check the source, not the WhatsApp screenshot
Immigration rules are perfect WhatsApp-forward material because one changed sentence can become ten confident voice notes.
For this one, the official wording is unusually clear.
Two years if you apply by December 31, 2026.
Eighteen months if you apply from January 1, 2027.
If this date sits anywhere near your graduation, save the GOV.UK page.
The six months are real. The group-chat interpretation may not be.
