Nobody warned me about the loneliness

  1. Everybody prepares you for the paperwork and the weather. Nobody sits you down and says you will not hear your own language in a shop for three months.
  2. This is the part that gets people. The admin is hard but it ends. The quiet does not end on a schedule.
  3. Two years in and I still call home at odd hours just to hear background noise.
  4. What surprised me was how expensive it is to be homesick. Every flight back is somebody salary.
  5. And the food. Nothing tastes like it does at home, no matter how much you pay.
  6. Three years. It gets better, but it never becomes the same thing. You just build a different life beside the one you left.
